The Directorate General of Medical Supplies had been established in 1999 as ‘Directorate General of Stores’ vide Ministerial Decision No. 82/99 amending the Ministerial Decision No. 09/94. Later the Directorate General of Stores have been renamed to Directorate General of Medical Supplies (DGMS) vide Royal Decree No. 21/2002 dated 03rd March 2002.

 Recently, the organizational structure of DGMS have been changed vide Ministerial Decision No. 67/2015 to include Department of Pharmaceutical Care, Regional Stores at Nizwa & Salalah, Professional Development & Career Guidance, Quality Management & Medicines Safety, Pharmacists & Asst.Pharmacists Development Sections to strengthen the pharmaceutical care provided and Medication safety.

DGMS is responsible for the procurement, Storage and distribution of all supplies of drugs, surgical and laboratory consumable items for all MOH Health Units. DGMS provides technical supervision of Pharmacy Service in the MOH Health Units including standardization of Hospital pharmacy practice & procedures, continuing education & training of Pharmacy Staff. Procurement mechanism includes GCC Joint Gulf Tenders, International & Local Tenders, with participation of other Govt. Institutions.

The Central Medical Store is located at Muscat in addition to two Regional Stores at Nizwa and Salalah. All functions, such as procurement, receipts and issues are fully computerized. Hospitals, Polyclinics and most of the Health Centres are linked through the network system for indenting.

The strategic Reserve Store had been established since 1980. It is located at Bausher (Muscat Governorate) where all life-saving and vital medical items are stacked as a precautionary measure in case of any emergency, worldwide shortage or natural calamities.

An efficient Quality Surveillance & Reporting System for monitoring and improving the efficacy and safety of medicines and medical items purchased by MOH through Local and Gulf Tender have been implemented since 2002 with active participation of Health care professionals in various MOH Health Units.

DGMS have been awarded the prestigious ISO 9001:2008 certification for the Quality Management in Procurement, Receipt, Storage and Distribution of Medical Supplies since February 2011, aiming to continuing improvement in quality of services provided to meet customer satisfaction in a sustainable manner. In 2018 the quality management system has been successfully upgraded to ISO 9001:2015.

Within the mandatory system for Continuing Professional Education Program in Ministry of Health, aiming to promote and update the knowledge, skills and attitude required for good patient focused pharmacy practice with the rapid expansion of technology in Health care, DGMS has successfully implemented the Continuing Professional Development program (CPD) in 2010. The Upcoming International Conference is the 10th one conducted annually by DGMS since then. DGMS has set a calendar of events for each year and implement workshops based on need assessment for the pharmaceutical care.
